Section Singles Tournament at Valley High School
10 teams in section 3AA. Top 4 below qualify for WPIAL Tournament next week
Round of 16
3rd seeded Stephanie Ohori (Ellis) def. Amber Sterrett (DA) 10-5
Amber played a fantastic match against a top opponent today. She held the lead at the mid-point 5-4, which grabbed the attention of onlookers. Amber was determined to run down balls all day and it kept her in the match. Ohori is a very disciplined player however, and really hit her stride to close out the match with a string of wins. Amber has a lot to be proud of. Amber was the only second seeded player bunched in the middle brackets. We were letting the best players battle it out from the start since there are two elite players from Knoch seeded 1 and 2. It shows the respect other coaches have for the great season she is having (9-0 at #2 Singles).
5th seeded Juliet Tatone (DA) def. McKenzie White (Burrell) 10-5
Juliet lost to McKenzie last week in a tough three set match. They went back and forth early and Juliet trailed 5-4. Somehow she managed to pull out a few close games and was able to win 6 in a row to close out the match. This was a great match between two experienced seniors.
5th seeded Juliet Tatone (DA) def. 4th seeded Lauren Schrock (Valley) 10-5
It was pretty amazing to see an exact repeat of her first match. Again she trailed 5-4 and won 6 straight games to win 10-5. She had to adjust her game to play a heavy server. Schrock was really pounding the lines with first serves early in the match. The rallies were well-constructed and Juliet was able to force some tough replies from Lauren. Schrock is really talented and the match brought out the best in both players
Can’t say enough about the effort here, as Juliet clinched a spot in the semi-finals and qualified for the WPIAL tournament next week. The top four players qualify.
#1 seed Laura Greb (Knoch) def. Juliet Tatone (DA) 6-0, 6-0
Also #2 seed Brooke Bauer (Knoch def. Stephanie Ohori (Ellis) 6-0, 6-0
You look for little victories against one of the top players in the state. Juliet slugged it out really well, and had a couple of game points. Tough players like Greb are really difficult to win a game from though. She is the returning Section and WPIAL champ, and was the PIAA State Runner-up last year as a freshman. Juliet had a great approach to the match and just stayed positive throughout. The skill level of Greb is fantastic and it is hard to match her intensity and shot-making. Juliet only lost one game at love which is quite an accomplishment.
The Finals and Consolation Finals will be held Thursday 9/13 at noon at Valley High School
1st seed Laura Greb (Knoch) vs. 2nd seed Brooke Bauer (Knoch)
Consolation Finals: Playing for Third Place
5th seeded Juliet Tatone (Derry) vs. 3rd seeded Stephanie Ohori (Ellis)
Ohori defeated Tatone 7-6, 6-2 earlier in the year, and beat Derry teammate Amber Sterrett in the first round today. She is really smooth on the court. She lost 6-0, 6-0 to Brooke Bauer today in the semi-finals. Bauer is also a state qualifier from Knoch from year ago.
We’re just looking to see Juliet battle hard consistently. She has the tools and should make this an interesting match.
