Derry led from start to finish in both contests this evening. The first game pitted a much smaller Derry squad against an imposing, physical team in Yough. Derry’s defense led the charge with some unbelieveable full-court pressure by a host of Derry defenders. Derry’s guards were on full display throughout the game. Katie Dunlap, Sam Gruska(7 pts), Alayna Williams, and Rachelle Marinchek(7pts) were relentless throughout the contest. The first game was a tight one with Derry leading by only 1 pt with a minute remaining. Emily Berkhimer(2 pts) forced a low percentage shot and Mylah O’Hanlon(6 pts) got a hard fought rebound. Yough then used their final timeout to draw up some full-court pressure. What they couldn’t plan for was “Lights Out” Marinchek’s superb speed. She took the inbound pass on the run and drained a lay-up to seal the victory. Not to be outdone was the “JV” squad. Alayna Williams and Jane Huss put on a show. Both tallying more than 12 steals each. Huss unloading for 29 points with her counterpart Alayna Williams putting up 7. Maizie Legge was unstoppable on the boards and contributed 2 pts. With her scorebook debut, Megan White also added 2 pts. With big rebounds and assists of their own Sophia Mazzoni, Julia Omlor, and Morgan Weston played vital roles in the second contest.
