The Derry girls took on an imposing Belle Vernon program, and withstood the challenge for most of the night. The girls calmed down after being down 12-2 to start the game, and got the margin down to 4 pts in the 4th quarter. The vaunted Belle Vernon press had them reeling in the 1st quarter, but calm responsible passes shredded the press in the 2nd. The team showed off a much better passing game, which lead to a balanced offense. Rachelle Marinchek 4 pts, Sam Gruska 4 pts, Mylah O’Hanlon 4 pts, Emily Berkhimer 4 pts, Alayna Williams 4 pts, and Cassie Byers 2 pts. The final score 31-22.
The “JV” squad was lead by Jane Huss and Alayna Williams. The two guards harassed and disrupted any real offense Belle Vernon tried. The pair then used their superb breakaway speed to open up for fast break after fast break. On the back end of their defense, Maizie Legge 4 pts, Sophia Mazzoni 2pts, Cassie Byers, Megan White, Julia Omlor, and Morgan Weston stood their ground and stopped any brief lapse in defense the two guards may have had. Huss was once again the leading scorer 24 pts. The second half of the dynamic duo, Alayna Williams, threw in 10 pts of her own. Final Score 40-13
