After a tough final inning 3-2 loss on Friday against the Richland Rams, the Derry Area baseball team sent out freshman Nate Papuga to the mound in his varsity debut Saturday afternoon against Homer Center.
After giving up a run on two hits in the first inning and spotting the Wildcats a 1-0 lead, the right-hander settled down and pitched a complete game going five inning’s in an 11-1 mercy rule win for the Trojans. He finished with four strikeouts while surrendering seven hits.
Derry got off to a slow start offensively, but we’re able to finish with eight hits.
Sophomore Antonio Hauser had two hits and two RBI. He also scored two runs. Junior Ryan Hood smashed a towering two run double to centerfield and he ended with two hits on the day.
Josh Ulery and Ryan Bushey added RBI singles, and senior Elijah Penich put the game away with a game ending pinch hit single.
The Trojans swiped 10 bases in their two games this weekend led by Bushey, Matt McDowell and Jaden Jackson. They now have 41 steals in just eight games.
Junior Brayden Mickinac drew five more walks this weekend and now has an on base percentage of .533.
Bushey and Ulery were named to the all-tournament team.
Derry (6-3) will get back to section play on Monday in a big two game series with first place Deer Lakes. Monday’s game time is 4pm from Grandview Field.
Richland defeated Claysburg Kimmel 8-2 in the championship game.
