The Derry Area Trojan baseball team opened up its 2021 season on Tuesday by dropping a 3-2 decision to the home standing Valley Vikings.
After Valley took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, the Trojans tied it up 1-1 in the fifth inning on a base hit by Lucas Ray. Derry then loaded the bases for Josh Ulery who smacked a hard ground ball that was headed into left field, but the Viking shortstop made a spectacular play to get the force out at second to end the threat. That was one of four outstanding defensive plays by Valley on the afternoon.
The Vikings would then get a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the 6th inning to make it a 3-1 game.
Derry would not go away however as after one out in the seventh, Elijah Penich hit a towering homerun to left field to make it a 3-2 game, but that’s all the Trojans could muster.
Pitching and defense were also bright spots for Derry in their opener as Paul Koontz and Josh Ulery threw solid innings. CF Matt McDowell threw a runner out at the plate. Sam Jones made a diving catch in RF and Brayden Mickinac threw out two baserunners attempting to steal.
Derry will take on the Vikings again at Grandview Field tomorrow at 4:00. If you can’t make it to the game, you can catch all of the action on the Westmoreland Sports Network beginning with the pregame show at 3:50. www.westmoreland sports.com. You can also follow the GameChanger app at GC.com.
