Game one of the Homer Center Classic baseball tournament on Saturday featured a pitchers duel between Derry Sophomore Paul Koontz and Homer Center senior Canyon Rankin. The Trojans scored first in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Donte Klapchar, but the Wildcats would answer with two in the bottom of the inning to lead 2-1.
DA tied the game in the top of the sixth on a Ryan Bushey sacrifice fly, but the Wildcats scored the game winner in the bottom of the inning on a Jayke Saiani triple.
Koontz struck out six and scattered six hits in the hard luck loss. He was named to the all-tournament team for his performance. Nick Detore pitched the final 2/3 of the inning striking out one and giving the Trojans a chance in the seventh.
Rankin picked up the win going the distance allowing five hits, while striking out two.
DA freshman Ryan hood finished with two hits. He was also named to the all- tournament squad.
